Years ago, William was "bitten by the fiddle bug" and had the bold idea to build his own fiddle to learn on. That idea became the "seed" for a life-changing journey into local history, instrument building, heirloom seeds, a Master’s degree, and community.
Here, you’ll find videos of original ethnobotanical songs, Primitive Baptist meetinghouse hymns, old hymns, and ballads. Early in his journey, William learned the value of experiencing music and stories firsthand—or, as it’s known in the tradition, learning from "warm hands." Music serves many roles: it’s a cultural glue that inspires, enlivens, instructs, and strengthens communities. The music William stewards has carried mountain people through both joyous and difficult times, and he firmly believes these songs are not only treasures of the past but also vital tools for resilience today. Music is also a key part of William's "Seed Saving Evangelism;" from the old fiddle tune "Leatherbritches" to his songs about greasy beans, tomatoes, and heirloom gardening. |
