WHen the Last Trumpet SHall Sound

Picture
My last gig with Bobby, at Wild Acres on the invitation of Don Pedi.
The last gig I did with Bobby was up at Wild Acres up around Little Switzerland.  It was really Bobby's gig, all I would do is bang on the guitar for some of his songs, set up a little PA, and help him get where he needed to go.  I loved doing it, and if it weren't for the outbreak of COVID, I would have done it a lot more.  It was a little folklorist's dream to spend time with Bobby.  That day before we left for Wild Acres, Bobby told me he wanted to teach me a song we might do at the end of the show.  It was "When the Last Trumpet Shall Sound."  We studied on the chords for a little bit, and discovered we liked how the chords in straight D (not 2nd fret capo D) sounded.  Last Trumpet didn't make it off the set list though, as we didn't make it all the way through the set--one of the leaders of whatever retreat was going on up there (it was not Don Pedi), asked us to wrap it up before we got there.  I didn't think much of it at the time, and ever-kind Bobby didn't put up any resistance (he just wasn't that kind of feller).
Later Bobby went up to Ferrum College for what would end up being his last performance.  There with one of our friends Ash Devine, Bobby sang this old song that he learned from Maw Maw.  Later we were told that Bobby told his friend Doug 30 years ago, that this would be the last song he ever sang.  In all the time I knew and heard Bobby, he never sang this song up until the very end.

Attached is not Maw Maw or Bobby singing, and it's just enough so you know how it goes, but I *WILL* eventually add the REAL recordings, there's just a LOT of files to go through.  For now, I am adding those to other songs in the order they appear on Bobby's tape transfers (and that transfer project is still ongoing), but I didn't want this first song to be without a recording in case someone wanted to learn it, or jog their memory.  Last thing I will say, in some of Bobby's notes he wrote "Cry and hide" not "try and hide."  For me he sang it as it is written here:

When the Last Trumpet Shall Sound

Fathers will cry for the rocks and mountains,
Fathers will cry for the rocks and mountains.
Fathers will cry for the rocks and mountains
When the last trumpet shall sound.

Try and hide from the face of Jesus,
Try and hide from the face of Jesus.
Try and hide from the face of Jesus
When the last trumpet shall sound.

Mothers will cry for the rocks and mountains,
Mothers will cry for the rocks and mountains.
Mothers will cry for the rocks and mountains
When the last trumpet shall sound.

Try and hide from the face of Jesus,
Try and hide from the face of Jesus.
Try and hide from the face of Jesus
When the last trumpet shall sound.

Brothers ……

Try and hide from the face of Jesus,
Try and hide from the face of Jesus.
Try and hide from the face of Jesus
When the last trumpet shall sound.

Sisters ……

Sinners will cry for the rocks and mountains,
Sinners will cry for the rocks and mountains.
Sinners will cry for the rocks and mountains
When the last trumpet shall sound.
