Field Recordings By Bobby
Bobby was a prolific documenter of folksong and storytelling. Most of his recordings are housed in the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC. We inherited several boxes of tapes and are in the process of transferring them to Mp3 and Wav files. Additionally, Bev and Dan Patterson recorded Bobby extensively. Bobby did say that he still had some recordings that were never sent to Chapel Hill. A part of this process is figuring out what recordings are merely duplicates from his reel-to-reel recorder, and which ones may not be represented in the collections at UNC.
This cassette was labeled "Lizzie Ellison 1992." It appears to have the same recording on both sides of the tape, which Bobby may have done to make extra sure he had copied the original reel-to-reel? I don't find Lizzie's name in the Bobby McMillon Collection in the UNC Southern Folklife Collection finding aide, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is not represented there--possibly as part of on of the Rolf Ellison Reel-to-reels. The other singer, besides Bobby, I assume is Rolf Ellison, and perhaps they are discussing songs that W.T. Ellison sang. I do not know the identity of the child in the background, nor the identities of the drivers of the many cars that can be heard passing by.
